Asphalt Preservation - An Environment Friendly Mode Of Road Maintenance Asphalt is used widely by different councils and construction companies for preservation of various wood pieces, also for road maintenance. There is a new green alternative concept of resurfacing and preventative maintenance of roads by preserving the surfaces through asphalt treatment so as to stop the deterioration of road network. The asphalt preservative is used as cold spray for doing surface treatment for macadam, asphalt, and surface dressings. The preservative contains an extremely hard, natural and readily soluble resinous hydrocarbon called as Gilsonite. The solution is sprayed according to the recommended dosages followed by the silica aggregate coating that proves beneficial for even thin surfaces. Asphalt Application and Treatment The asphalt penetrates into the road surface and chemically rebounds the binder so as to form a flexible membrane of 10 mm around the sprayed aggregate so as to seal-in essential resins and oils. The re-engineered bitumen that is locked-in remains flexible instead of turning into brittle one. The treatment prevents any stagnation of water and also protects the stone from oxidizing. It maintains the polished stone value along with skid resistance for smooth run of the vehicles. Asphalt Applicable Areas A purpose built vehicle along with three operatives can complete the spray work on 40,000m2 area in one shift. The process doesn’t involve any noise so it’s virtually silent and is ideal for off-peak treatment on trunk roads and highways. This treatment can be done on kerb lines and areas, small roads with restricted vehicular access. The treated area can be made available for normal traffic usage within one to three hours of application but sometimes it depends on temperature also as ambient temperature easily allows the application of treatment. Asphalt Preservation Importance Even a single application of the asphalt preservative is very effective. It protects the joint free reinstated areas from degradation by infrared, road repair process from traffic abrasion, water ingress, and ageing. It has been used for various larger scale preventative maintenance programmes like treatment of taxiways, trunk, and urban roads, footpaths and car parks. It gives additional life to the surface and with passage of time its look does not diminish and look as good as when it was first done. The asphalt preservative help the roads from premature ageing of thin surfacing as it will cost a lot of money to repair again. Asphalts act as preservative for blacktop, lamp columns, crash barriers, bridges, and rail fencing. Even the people in highways sector, airport owners, and other stakeholders keep a preservation culture of asphalt for quick repair. The asphalt is greener, cleaner, and sustainable preservative than other cheap ones. Climate Change Bill and Taxpayers As the climate change bill has become a law now the industries have to meet certain environment friendly norms to maintain the climate like cutting down the carbon footprint. Even the asphalt industries will have to recycle the old material and process some improvements in the work. By preventing crack in the surface, the reactive maintenance cost can be brought down which will be beneficial for both the motorists whose vehicles are running on the road and taxpayers who have to pay tax for repairing and maintaining the roads.
