Computer and video gaming information and cheat codes in the wild Computer and video games make up a major part of entertainment resources in today’s world. What was simply a niche market for some in the mid 70’s, computer and video games is a full blown $27 billion industry today. The industry has seen reasonably high profits by enticing the “gamers” to play a host of different games that have high price tags attached. The industry had a transition from simple ‘Atari’ based games to today’s most desired Sony PlayStation (PS2, PS3) or Microsoft Xbox type branded games. Game developers usually release a trial or “demo” version of their games through websites that has limited features or designated expiry period. These free video games and other game information with many frequently asked questions (FAQ) generate enough interests for the gamers to acquire a copy of the game. Free video or computer games though, are not hard to find. There are many websites that offer free games for download. Some are fully functional trial versions (expire after certain time) while most of the other games’ features (usually the most interesting ones) remain disabled in the free/demo versions. Today’s popular platforms for computer and video games include PC, PS, Xbox, DS, GBA, GameCube and Wii. All these games from different platforms have generated countless “gamers’ forum” in the internet. There are websites entirely dedicated to tips and tricks of popular games and game FAQs. These web forums or websites give important information about video games and free games. They also provide gaming “cheat codes” (shortcuts to hidden features, skipping levels, change game’s behaviour etc) which is a most wanted item for the desperate gamers. Cheat codes, which is also called “backdoors” or simply “cheats”, usually come free in the websites with gaming information or the web forums. Gamers from all corners of the world share their experiences and knowledge on game strategies, difficulties, cheat codes etc using the web. Cheat codes are usually in the form of combination of several keystrokes in the keyboard or gaming console. At times they include several program tweaks to allow the cheat codes to work. Cheat codes differ from the software hacks where it does not infringe the copy write laws. Therefore there are legal websites, magazines and other types of publications that have reviews/discussions about games, related FAQs and cheat codes. There are also official message boards and live chat options for video and PC games related contents. CNET Networks owned GameFAQs (www.gamefaqs.com) is such a popular websites that is considered to have experienced highest traffic. Here FAQs, reviews, game data, cheat codes, hardware/software requirements etc are published with an option of contribution from the gamers themselves. Another website owned by CNET Networks is GameSpot (www.gamespot.com). This site also provides cheat codes and FAQs and most interestingly - free games. There are hundreds of websites that offer free/trial games but one should exercise caution in downloading computer games from them since many websites offer games with malicious software integrated. With the purchased original copy of the game most of the FAQs are supplied with its box and many more are given in the company’s website. If your interest is on gaming FAQs or cheat codes you may search and find them in popular computer related magazines and on the websites. You may find them easily on the web using the search engines. But if you are looking for free games, as a piece of advice, look for them in the well reputed game related websites only.
