Types of Pond Pumps As many people who are shopping for a pond pump will see, pond pumps are usually placed into two categories: external pond pumps and submersible pond pumps. But as a new pond owner, which type do you need. External pond pumps, as the name suggests, are used outside of the pond. Generally speaking external pumps are going to be used for larger ponds usually over 2000 gallons or if supplying water to larger water features like a large fountain or waterfall. They are also the best option for sue with bio filters and pressure filters. They are more energy efficient for larger volumes of water and usually are equipped with a strainer for removing debris and a primer pot, while some more expensive models are actually self priming. Submersible pond pumps are best suited for small ponds of 2000 gallons or less. Submersible pumps are much easier to install as many are simply plug and play meaning you set it in the pond and turn it on and that’s it. Many submersible pumps on the market also come with spray attachment so they can also double as a fountain to add oxygen back to the water and improve aesthetic appeal. Given the option, a magnetic drive submersible pump will be the ideal choice as they are more durable and less likely to break due to it fewer moving parts. No matter if your pond will need an external pump or submersible pump, the rule of thumb for selecting the appropriate size is the same. You will want a pump that will circulate the entire volume of water at least once every hour. Remember, it is always best to go larger than smaller when selecting a pump and even a pond filter. So a pond filter, a pond pump and a pond aerator are essential thing if you plan on getting fish for your lake or pond, make sure though, that you get the right sizes of everything for the size of your pond or lake. Yes, you will have to get the sizes right, because you really cannot have a pump for an inside water feature running in an outside lake or pond, it will not do anything, and worse case is that it will break, because those pumps are not made to have sand and things too close to them. So you will have to do a lot of homework before you do this, also, remember that you will have to plan your lake or pond, you will have to plan your back yard, you will have to do this so that you do not have the moisture of your lake too close to your home foundation. If you are planning to use it, make sure that your planning is practical, so you do not want to pack it full of cool things, just to make it look cool, make a pond or a lake, but be sure to use your pond supplies, pond filters, pond pumps and or lake supplies and lake pumps, or it will not be practical.
