After studying French and Spanish at Oxford, he lived and worked in Brazil, with the result that he is fluent in French, Spanish and Portuguese. “The only way to learn a language is to experience the language in its natural environment” he says. “By that, I mean that you have to go and live in a country where the language is spoken, and make a conscious effort to become part of the community and learn about the local culture.” When asked about what that means exactly, he replies “It’s all very well learning about the French Revolution and Molière at school and University, but that is not really going to prepare you for, say, an important business meeting in Paris. When I moved to Spain, I deliberately avoided living with other English students and had a great time living with two Spanish guys, with the result that my understanding of Spanish and, just as important, of Spaniards, improved tremendously during my time there.” Nick goes on to compare his own experience with that of LSC students: “We see the same at LSC: the real benefits come to those students that really make the effort to learn about London, Britain, and get involved.” When you go to any of the Business English schools England where English is spoken as the first language you will hear English all around you spoken in its natural accent, which is very important for learning a language.
