More and more people every year are going to school for degrees in higher education in such areas as history, sociology, or philosophy. But what do students do with those degrees after they have finished their schooling? Something totally irrelevant to what they were studying. Many of these former liberal arts students have large amounts in student loans to repay and often, students are not able to start their careers immediately after graduating college. They have to take other jobs unrelated to their fields of interest to be able to make car payments and student loan payments, in addition to paying for the necessities like rent, utilities, and groceries. Problems like this just don’t make financial sense for many people, especially in an economy where the cost of living and the cost of education increase substantially from year to year. Why spend time working in a retail store to pay back the $50,000 in student loans you accumulated at school before you are able to begin the career you trained for? What does that mean for the economy? There is a professional gap between those working minimum wage jobs and careers that require degrees in higher education. Jobs that require vocational training, such as HVAC maintenance, fit into that gap, and there are not finding enough people to keep up with the demand. The American economy is seeing a lack of trained technicians to complete the necessary work that everyone needs, such as fixing air conditioning units or upgrading a heating system.
